About 30-35 years ago when I was attending a Christian Business Men International Conference in the mid-west, I happened to get acquainted with Paul Pillai. He was then a relatively new Christian. Previously he was engaged in politics in Kerela, South India. Who invited him to CBMC, I do not know. I was asked to share and pay for a motel room with him. We got very well acquainted, and Mr. Pillai had an opportunity of getting to know many CBMC members from all over the country. These contacts he has used with his work in India. Several have been able to help him with contributions to build up his work in India.
About 30 years ago he felt the calling to start an orphanage and a Bible school. There was about 40-50 acres of mud land north of Delhi for sale at $16,000. He prayed about it. No one really wanted the property. It had been for sale for a long time. A lady from Oregon sent him the $16,000 so that he could pay cash. This was the start of Grace Bible College and Seminary and also Grace Orphanage. The first few years he was just shopping around for fill-in dirt, get proper drainage, and put up some walls. Afterwards using mainly funds from independent Christian groups in the United States, he built the Bible school and an orphanage where they have about 2,500 people living. Presently they have 1,200 children and 700 bible students. Most of them go to school for 4 years to study and the rest are helpers and teachers. He has built walls around this location. It has several streets and an auditorium for over 2,000 people, the student center. His theory is not to borrow money, but to build as the Lord leads. Today he can operate this with his son Sujay, for about $600,000 yearly. A lot of the students cannot pay but they work half a day to support. Presently they have 4,000 workers in full-time Christian work. Over half of these work in Asian Arabic countries. God has really blessed the Pillais. This is the largest Bible school in the Far East Countries.
Three years ago I was asked to obtain a modern King James simplified Bible translated in the Hindi language. This was developed by World Bible Translators in Fort Worth, Texas. About 50,000 Bibles were printed at New Life Literature in Sri Lanka. Two months ago, they were dedicated at Grace Bible College with 2,000 pastors and students there. From Grace there were 100 pastors that each received their own copies. I wish that you could have seen the happiness and satisfaction there was in receiving these copies. Delhi has over 14 million people there and a lot of them with a minimum education. We felt that there was a need for these new Bibles.
May God bless the work in spreading the Bible through Mr. Pillai and his activities. Mr. Pillai wanted to thank CBMC and its outreach and many of those that have helped them build the school. Due to age, he is not able to travel much overseas, but his son Ajay Pillai has been active in helping the school and raising funds in the USA for the work.
