Discipleship - What Is It?

Discipleship What is discipleship? We’re glad you asked. Sometimes admitting we don’t know something can be embarrassing. In this case, you need not worry. Discipleship is not a topic that is widely discussed or universally understood.

Christian discipleship is a process that was actually born the moment Jesus selected His first followers. As He walked along the Sea of Galilee inviting men to "follow me and I will make you fishers of men," the Creator of the World was actively engaged in discipleship. Today we define discipleship as the intentional process of teaching and encouraging a man to be an obedient, passionate, intimate, loving disciple of Christ.

In this life-long journey, a man should

  • experience a surrendered life
  • be led by the Holy Spirit
  • be committed to applying scripture to his values and behavior with a biblical worldview.

Does that answer your question?

This discipleship thing must have been pretty important to Jesus, because it was the last thing He discussed with his closest friends before He ascended into heaven. We call it the Great Commission.

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).

The Great Commission was a charge, a rallying cry for those who followed Jesus and knew Him well, to adopt a level of boldness to change the world. In CBMC, we apply that charge to our entire lives, not to a small division of our lives called “ministry.” We work to make disciples by having mature followers of Christ walk beside new believers through daily life.

So, where do you think you are right now? Want to change the world for Christ?

Operation Timothy Operation Timothy is a great discipleship tool we at CBMC have been using for more than 40 years to help men and women deepen their walk with Christ.

Take a couple minutes and explore our Operation Timothy (OT) site. You’ll find that it connects a new believer (Timothy) with a mature believer (Paul) in a life-on-life encounter to dramatically assist you in your discipleship journey. Once you make a decision to shed your way of doing life and engage Christian discipleship, get ready for the ride of your life. It starts with a simple decision to get to know Jesus better, and then by God’s grace, your transformation begins.
